Creating Moments that Matter in Your Business
As we move into the holiday season (yay and how in the world?), I’ve been thinking a lot about the hospitality and experiential content we taught at this year’s Client Appreciation Event. Our teachings came from Dan and Chip Heath’s Power of Moments. And if I had to breifly summarize the book, I’d describe it as a how-to guide for creating moments that matter.
For our purposes, we focused on moments that matter in your business. But as I’ve been internalizing and practicing these concepts, I can’t help but naturally start applying them to my life too. When Dana taught her section, she told us about some advice she received before her son’s first Christmas: “You get to create the magical moments that matter during the holidays.” Receiving that advice reframed everything for her: she puts so much effort into the sweet, kiddo details because she wants to, not because she has to.
The same is true for us creating moments that matter in business…

For this year’s Client Appreciation Event, we wanted every element to be a meaningful moment. So, our tablescapes featured Hester & Cook and Amelia’s Flowers among other meaningful, creative touches.
The Power of Moments Summary
In The Power of Moments, the Heath brothers identify 4 elements that make experiences memorable and meaningful. They call it the E.P.I.C. framework:
- E — Elevation: Moments that lift us above the everyday.
- P — Pride: Moments that celebrate effort, growth, or achievement.
- I — Insight: Moments that help us see something in a new way.
- C — Connection: Moments that deepen relationships and belonging.
These aren’t abstract ideas; they’re design principles (I’m looking at you, creatives!) for creating moments that matter. In small business, these E.P.I.C. pillars can be built into the way we lead teams, engage clients, and mark milestones.
Why Meaningful Moments Matters in Business
When you operate a small business, your product is important, but your moments keep customers coming back. How you onboard a new employee, make clients feel special, or personally know all the people who have a “seat at your table” shape your brand.
That’s why this season is such a valuable reset point. The holidays bring natural opportunities to pause, reflect, and elevate everyday interactions into something more meaningful. Whether that’s through a handwritten note, a shared celebration, or a gesture that says “I see you and appreciate you,” these small choices become defining moments.
A Season to Design Moments
Over the next few weeks, we’ll explore each of the 4 E.P.I.C. pillars, through the perspective of our Strategists. You’ll get the cliff’s notes version of CAE, with examples and just-do-it style assignments.
My hope is that this series inspires you to see the holidays this year as a season of designing moments: ones that reflect how you show up in your business, community, and among friends and family.
