My Career Journey to Creative Consulting*: Meditations Interview with Ryan Zlomek
Before jumping into this week’s share (backing way up and talking about Creative Consulting at large!), I want to thank everyone who participated in our Business Development Bootcamp Launch over the past couple weeks.
Internally it was a lot of work, and it was so much fun. Cara and I loved putting together the content, Tammy was in organization and school supply heaven, and Erin held down the Advisory Practice, while I went into our newly coined “tornado mode.” BTW- thank you to all the coffee beans that sacrificed themselves for my productivity. I appreciate your service.
This week, we’re going to zoom out. I’m really excited to share a podcast interview I recently did: Meditations with Ryan Zlomek. This is hands-down my favorite interview I’ve ever done. Ryan is an incredible researcher, question-asker, and listener. The balance of depth and breadth he pursued in our 75 minute conversation BLEW. ME. AWAY.
I’m not sure what’s in the air right now, but over the past few weeks, I’ve been fielding many questions about being a creative consultant (*or as we like to clarify: Business Advisor). I’m always happy to answer questions and help others; but I’ve found myself redirecting people to this Meditations episode – because I can’t imagine anyone asking better or smarter questions about my journey here, than Ryan. We cover:
- My career path, going way back, including my appreciation and gratitude for corporate life, my career in insurance, and building a business in London
- Why I chose Nashville for creative consulting and where Ellevated Outcomes is going next
- Our view that product & pricing should be a small business’s top focus
- The biggest business and personal finance mistake when you’re growing a creative business
- How hard the long game is (hint: so hard)
I’d love for you to listen, as I enjoyed the conversation and Ryan is so, so good. Also: if you’re wondering how I connected with a computer science professor, who owns a pinball arcade in New York and has a podcast on the side…
We met at the dress rehearsal dinner of a wedding last year. We had an energetic conversation about small business (during which our spouses promptly excused themselves), Ryan took my card, and we stayed in touch. Oh hi, business development 😛
Here’s where you can listen to the episode on Apple and Spotify.
PS: if you’re interested in hearing about the insides of Ellevated Outcomes, I’ll be sharing more in the coming weeks (including a new Strategist job opening). And in the meantime here’s some more about our history and business:

Thank you for your incredible continued support of us and those in our network – like the most thoughtful Ryan Zlomek!
